This week, police emphasised the importance of making use of ironmongery products in order to protect property from theft.
In Motherwell, residents were urged to secure their outhouses using strong hinges and hasps after a quantity of cash was stolen from a local respite centre.
The Hamilton Advertiser reported comments by constable Derek McWhinnie of Motherwell police that ways of improving shed security include attaching hinges and hasps to sheds, with coach bolts or non-returning screws.
In Northumbria, police said that shed bars are particularly effective in defeating thieves who attempt to break into outhouses.
Detective sergeant Phil Cleugh said: "As well as valuable items often being stored in sheds and outhouses, thieves often break in looking for tools they can use to commit other crime."
The Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph reported that police and estate agents have teamed up to provide residents with information packs, which contain advice such as fitting doors with secure locks.
