Britons 'should employ window locks in winter'

UK homeowners have been advised to fit sheds and outhouses with strong padlocks and to keep windows locked even when they are at home because October to December are the months when most thefts take place.
Studies carried out by insurer Saga indicate Britons are 24 per cent more likely to be burgled in November than in February and Tuesday is the favoured day of the week for criminals to break in.
In a statement, the group went on to say keys should not be kept near doors as thieves could use hooks and magnets to reach them through the letter-box.
The firm added: "Install and use outside lights to deter burglars, lights which have sensors that turn themselves on and off at dawn and dusk are recommended."
Last week, Knowsley Online reported residents in Liverpool were urged by local police to make use of deadlocks, window locks and internal lights on timers in order to keep their premises secure as the nights draw in.
