Conservatories 'can personalise homes'

Conservatory-building can be an opportunity to create an individual home extension, according to Grand Designs' presenter Kevin McCloud.

Speaking at the Channel 4 programme's live show at Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre on Friday October 10th, Mr McCloud said building a conservatory can add value to a home, as well as creating extra space.

He commented building projects can also have an environmental impact, saying: "An opportunity to extend out the back is an opportunity to re-orientate and change the direction of the building so that the sun can heat the building more efficiently."

Mr McCloud went on to say treating developments as architectural projects can mean customising a building and making a person's ownership of it more personal.

Research carried out by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors' Building Cost Information Service earlier this year found the average cost of home improvements had risen by 20 per cent in the past two years.
